It's Been a While...
Yes, it has been a long time since I published an update on my website. Life has been pretty busy the past year and I've had some time off to focus on being a mum! My little boy has just turned one, so I will be able to spend more time on my practice now that things aren't quite so crazy. Keep an eye out for a general update and website overhaul! In the meantime, why not have a look at my Facebook page, www.facebook.com/sara.hellsing/, which I have managed to keep a little more up to date.

Second Prize Win in Prague - 2014 Stanislav Libenský Award
I am excited to announce that I have been awarded Second Prize in the 2014 Stanislav Libenský Award which opened in Prague, Czech Republic, on September 19. There were 39 finalists included in the exhibition this year, from countries all over the world. I couldn't quite believe it when I heard the news, particularly considering the quality and diversity of the other finalist works. It's a huge honour and still seems quite surreal. I am waiting to hear more about the prize itself so I'll post another update once I have more information. The work I submitted was Moments Passed, created last year as part of my final body of work for my Honours year at uni.
Here's an excerpt from the SLA website about my work:
The installation evokes a recollection of the past, and it was highly praised by the jury. It is an outstandingly detailed work, with a feeling of close contact, capturing a distant memory and a return to the past. At Nirst sight the objects look like pebbles but they are highly-worked pieces of glass, “almost like talismans”, the jury adds.

Canberra Glassworks Residency
I am busy preparing for an upcoming residency in Canberra, ACT, at Canberra Glassworks in Kingston. It's a 6 week Emerging Artist Support Scheme (EASS) residency which I was awarded as part of the ANU School of Art Graduation Exhibition in December last year. I'll be focusing on developing a retail line of products as well as creating new works for exhibition. I'll be working from 1st September to 12th October so come and have a look and a chat if you're in the Canberra area.
Canberra Glassworks is open to the public from 10am-4pm Wednesday - Sunday. Follow the links below for more information.

Prague on the horizon
I am thrilled to announce that I have been accepted as a finalist in the 2014 Stanislav Libenský Award! My work will be included in the exhibition in Prague later this year and the winner will be able to participate in a course of their choice at Pilchuck in 2015. The exhibition will be held in the Art Salon S – Dancing House, Prague from 19th September – 14th December 2014.
Here is a short extract from their website:
The competition serves as an international presentation of young glass artists. The aim of the competition is to help the development of glass art in the young scene and to compare different approaches and methods. The initiator and main organiser – the Prague Gallery of Czech Glass – hopes that this competition, followed by a long term exhibition, will help young artists enter the business world and explore the potential of glass.
